How the Twitter / X engagement rate is calculated
Engagement rate by follower is the standard every social report uses: total engagements on a post, divided by the account's follower count, times 100. We average it across the account's most recent original posts rather than reading a single viral one, because one lucky post tells you nothing about an account.
Engagements here means likes plus replies plus reposts plus quotes. Impressions are deliberately left out of the denominator: Twitter / X only exposes them reliably on your own posts, so a rate built on them would not be comparable between accounts.
What counts as a good engagement rate on Twitter / X
It moves inversely with size, which is why comparing yourself to a big account is a trap. As a rough read: under 1,000 followers, anything above 4% is healthy. Between 1,000 and 10,000, 1% to 3% is the normal band. Above 100,000 followers, 0.5% is already strong, and the largest accounts sit well under that.
So the number is only useful against a baseline. Compare against accounts your own size, and against your own account last month.
Why your Twitter / X engagement rate drops as you grow
Follower count is cumulative, attention is not. Every account carries dormant followers who signed up years ago and never open the app, and they stay in the denominator forever. A growing account adds them faster than it adds engaged readers, so the rate slides even while the raw likes climb.
The practical takeaway: track average engagements per post alongside the rate. If engagements are rising and the rate is falling, you are fine. If both are falling, your reach genuinely dropped.
Turning your Twitter / X engagement into customers
A high engagement rate on posts nobody buys from is a vanity result. The accounts worth studying are the ones where the replies are full of people describing a problem you could solve, because that is where the pipeline is.
That is the job squidX does automatically: it watches Twitter / X for people describing the exact problem your product fixes, scores them against your ideal customer profile, and hands you the shortlist. The engagement rate tells you who has an audience. squidX tells you who is ready to buy.
