How to download a video from X
Three steps, and no account at any point.
- Open the post with the video and copy its link. On mobile that is the share icon, then Copy link; on desktop it is the address bar
- Paste it in the box above and press the button
- Pick a quality. The file saves to your device
The link can be the full URL, the shortened one X gives you, or just the numeric post id. It works the same whether the address says x.com or twitter.com.
Which quality to pick
Every post carries the same video at several bitrates, and the labels above are the real resolutions rather than marketing names.
The highest one is the original as uploaded, which is what you want for anything that will be re-edited, projected, or watched on a large screen. The middle ones are what X serves on a normal connection and are usually indistinguishable on a phone. The lowest exists for slow networks and looks it.
If you are unsure, take the highest. Storage is cheap and you cannot add detail back later.
Why nothing passes through our servers
The download runs entirely between your browser and X's own media CDN. We look up the post, hand your browser the file addresses, and step out of the way.
That is not a detail, it is the whole design. A downloader that proxies files pays for every megabyte twice and gets slower the more people use it, which is why so many of them are plastered in ads or cap you at a few downloads a day. Ours costs a fraction of a cent per lookup no matter how large the video, so there is nothing to recoup.
It also means the file is never stored anywhere, never scanned, and never associated with you.
What you can and cannot do with the file
Downloading a public video for your own use is ordinary. Re-uploading someone else's video as if it were yours is not, and it is the fastest way to get an account removed.
The video belongs to whoever made it. Saving it for reference, for an edit you have permission to make, or because it is your own post, is fine. Republishing it without credit or permission is copyright infringement whatever tool produced the file, and X acts on those reports quickly.
If the post is from a protected account, the video is not public and this will not read it. That is intentional.
Downloading is not a growth strategy
Every hour spent collecting other people's videos is an hour not spent finding people who need what you built. The accounts that grow are the ones in the right conversations, not the ones with the biggest swipe file.
squidX runs that half for you: it watches X continuously for people describing the problem your product solves, scores each one against your ideal customer profile, and hands you a ranked shortlist every morning of who is worth replying to.
